Arundel Castle

Head of Castle's Titles

The Head of the Castle has several titles. Although at some points in history these titles have been taken away, they have always been returned to the head of the castle. The first title that most of the head of castle's have is the Duke of Norfolk. As you can see in the pictures below, the banner of the Duke of Norfolk is flying from the highest part of the castle, the summit of the tower on the motte. The second title that all the Duke's of Norfolk have is premier Duke of England. This is a very important title to have, because this makes the Duke of Norfolk, the head of all of the Dukes in all of England. The third title that all of the head's of the castle have is the Earl of Arundel. This is the most standard title, and basically just says that they are the head of the castle. The last title that all of the Earl's of Arundel have is the title of the hereditary Earl Marshal. The hereditary part just means that the title of Earl Marshal will pass on to the first son or the first closest male heir. The Earl Marshal was bestowed on the 1st Duke in 1483. The duties of the Earl Marshal include presiding at the College of Arms (they control matters that relate to healdry and honours), and managing all state processions and ceremonial. In many later years, the Earl Marshal arrange such important things as the funeral for Winston Churchill, and the investiture of HRH The Prince of Wales. In general, all of these titles prove the head of Arundel Castle to be a very important person in the society of not just the area surrounding the castle, but a very important person in the society of all of England.
